Couchbase tackles agentic AI development challenges
Dec 03, 2024
Couchbase has unveiled tools designed to help streamline the development of secure agentic AI applications at scale.
The developer data platform firm’s latest offering, Capella AI Services, includes model hosting, automated vectorisation, unstructured data preprocessing, and AI agent catalogue services.
Capella AI Services’ features promise to enable developers to prototype, build, test, and deploy AI agents while maintaining proximity between models and data—helping to reduce latency and operational costs typically associated with implementing new technology components.
Matt McDonough, SVP of Product and Partners at Couchbase, said: “As AI dramatically transforms applications, organisations need secure ways to integrate it and must handle the surge of data across diverse formats to build and deploy agentic applications with confidence.”
The new suite addresses several key challenges faced by enterprises adopting AI, including data security, privacy concerns, performance issues, and cost management.
Capella AI Services comprises five main components:
- Model services: Provides managed endpoints for leading LLMs and embedding models
- Unstructured data services: Handles document processing and transformation into JSON format
- Vectorisation services: Automates data vectorisation and indexing
- AI agent catalogue services: Offers a centralised repository for tools and metadata
- Capella AI functions: Enables AI-driven data analysis using SQL++ syntax
Carl Olofson, VP of IDC Research, commented: “The proliferation of AI agents is fundamentally transforming both development and operations, creating new data management challenges for enterprises.
“Couchbase Capella and its new AI Services are designed to strategically address these challenges, and provide enterprises the scalable architecture and flexibility needed to handle complex RAG workflows and manage huge volumes of new types of AI data.”
The platform is particularly focused on streamlining retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and ensuring secure model interactions. It allows developers to leverage their existing skills and preferred tools, including SQL++ query language and various programming languages, while maintaining control over data security and application performance.
Couchbase emphasises that the new services will help organisations deliver more personalised and contextual experiences whilst reducing development complexity and operational costs. The platform supports development from prototype to production, enabling the deployment of AI applications from cloud to edge.
